A great trek for someone who is short of time/ days in the mountains. I had 2 days to spend in Manali in late October and wanted and did not want to spend my time strolling on the mall, so decided to go to this trek. After checking out the description on Elan Adventures website I contacted a friend in Manali who was familiar with the terrain and was ready to accompany me to the lake. Since it was just a day and a half of walking, we did not carry much stuff except a tent and some dinner.

We started early in the morning (6ish), had  loads of aalu paranthas at a dhaba near Aleo bridge and took a bike ride to Vashisht temple. I would definitely recommend you to take a dip in the hot springs in the temple. We started walking up, the trail goes on the side of a hotel. It will be easy to spot and if you can't ask someone around. The trail is well defined for an hour or two. It ends when you reach a nice open pasture giving views of the valley. Keep walking up on the narrow jungle paths. You can always use google maps for general navigation as there aren't any maps of the region (at least none that I could find). My friend here was the one I was following most of the time. The way gets steeper but the trail is quite safe in dry weather. At around 3000m it started to rain heavy and we had to set up the tent at 12 as there was nowhere to take shelter. The rain stopped in half an hour and we packed up and started to walk again. We had to cross a rock garden hopping over boulders to skirt left on the face towards our destination. Ultimately around 6 we decided to camp at 4200m as it was started to get dark. We did not know how far we were from the lake and since there was no water around, we had to meld snow for the night.

In fact, the lake was just a couple of metres away hidden behind the flank of the mountain as we saw next morning. After taking our holy dip in the lake, we started our descent towards Gulaba. Navigating here is again straightforward but make sure you have done your homework. After getting a 1 hour nap somewhere on the way, we were able to reach Gulaba by noon. It wasn't difficult to find a lift to Manali from there and I was on the bus back to Delhi at 3 PM. So, yes, this trek can be done over a weekend, although I wished I had more time to enjoy the place. Uploading a few pictures too.

Desert safari isn't that much available in India but at Sam or as local says Sam dunes desert safari is a pretty popular activity. So one must visit this desert region.
