At Thengumarada, also known as a wildlife paradise and the paddy bowl of Nilgiris which is situated in the Nilgiris district and approximately 35 km from Bavani sagar and 40 km from Bannari in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu.
Vast stretches of emerald green paddy fields were frolicking to the tunes of a gentle breeze.Groups of palm and coconut trees serenely swayed, adding to the rhythm. My eyes travel along the green paddy carpet, as far as it could see and at the horizon, a stark contrast! Dull grey but massive hills masked in pearl white mist rose to the skies. The Moyar river flows through Thengumarada. Herds of cattle were being driven across the river which agitated the soft river bed, sending swirls of mud, up the surface. The heavy steps of the cattle rose to a clamor. On the river banks, bunches of marigolds irradiating an orange-red glow that poses a challenge to the invincible sun's glow are a drop dead gorgeous sight to watch.
A forest guest house here, accommodates tourists.Only two buses ply to kotagiri everyday once at 6:30 am and another by 1:30pm.
The road to Thengumarada offers a beautiful jungle safari experience to all those who trod upon it.While one side of the road throws an amazing view of the bhavanisagar dam, the other side is covered with mysterious deep forest.A wide variety of wild animals are seen crossing this road in order to reach the dam and this assortment includes - tiger (quite rare), leopard, wild boar, bear, elephant, black buck, sambhar deer, spotted deer(in plenty),striped hyena, feral buffalo and four horned antelope and a lot of bird species too.
Disclaimer : The road is in a pretty bad state with a lot of bumps and pits but then, what is a jungle safari without a few ups and downs? Jungle safari on an NH seems funny right?
In order to travel in private vehicles, one has to get prior permission from the forest offices in Sathyamangalam or bhavanisagar forest offices.
